SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican University of California’s athletics are off to a great start this season with the men’s soccer team having its best start since 1996. As of Saturday, Sept. 22 the soccer team has a 5-1 overall record; while the volleyball team swept all six sets in its first two games of the PacWest conference, giving the Lady Penguins a 2-0 record in league.

VOLLEYBALL

According to the PacWest volleyball coaches’ preseason poll, the Lady Penguins were predicted to finish last in the league. However, just as their new warm-up shirts say, “New Team, Same Dream,” the Lady Penguins are currently tied for first with Holy Names University.

The women defeated both Notre Dame de Namur and the Academy of Art in three straight sets each. By sweeping Notre Dame de Namur, the team won consecutive matches for the first time in its NCAA Division II experience.

Junior Jessica Jones shows good form warming up for the Sonoma State game, Friday, Sept. 7, 2012. Jones has earned double digit kills four games in a row.

Its last comparable winning stretch was in 2008 when the team was a part of the NAIA California Pacific Conference.

With this first set victory against Academy of Art, the Lady Penguins smashed a 15-set losing streak against the Urban Knights.

The highlights of the Academy of Art game included junior Hannah Stocking-Siagkris’ having the most kills of the game with 16; junior Kelsey Lardner made 33 assists and junior Jessica Jones had 4 blocks.

The Lady Penguins continued their winning streak with another sweep against the NAIA conference William Jessup University in which both Jones and sophomore Samantha Rains had 10 kills each and Stocking-Siagkris with an additional 7.

With these victories, the Lady Penguins’ overall record stands at 4-6 as they prepare to face fellow PacWest member University of Hawaii – Hilo on Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. in the Conlan Center.

Despite a great start with a 3-0 record, the men’s soccer team win streaks were snapped on Sept. 15, with a 5-0 loss to Azusa Pacific University.

But the Penguins soon rebounded with a 2-0 victory over Dixie State on Sept. 17 and an astonishing 5-0 victory over Cal Maritime Academy on Sept. 22, when the Penguins out-shot the Keelhaulers to score 30-3.

While senior Pedro Guevara scored 2 of the Penguins goals, freshmen Chris Sennes, sophomore Manny Sandavol-Guitierrez and sophomore Nuri Bon-Acosta each scored a goal of their own, sealing the game for the Penguins.

The team improved its record to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in league, the best overall start in 16 years for the Penguins.
