The 102 annual Bay to Breakers race is scheduled for May 19, 2013.  In light of the Boston Marathon bombings race organizers have banned hand luggage and carriers larger than 8 1/2″ x 11″ x 4″ at the event. These include: backpacks and any other type of container. In addition, existing bans on alcohol, floats, shopping carts, coolers, ice chests, and unregistered runners without race bibs will be strictly enforced.  Unregistered runners will be removed from the race.

San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr urges “observers and  participants to be attentive on race day and report unattended items such as backpacks and packages — if you see something, say something.”

Over 30, 000 runners are expected to participate in the 12K race that starts at Financial District onto Ocean Beach. At the beginning of the race, there will be a moment of silence to remember the victims of the Boston Marathon.

Participants, both serious and fun, are encouraged to wear costumes as judges are looking forward to seeing the creativity of runners for the Costume Competition.
